Description

BIG PAINTING - PLEASE FULLVIEW.

Of all the times of the year I love the beginning - and middle - of autumn the best.

This particular painting was inspired by talking a walk in the Moscow suburbs during last week. I wanted to catch that moment when the rain is about to hit, since it's a wonderful experience. I tried to work in a classic technique of 18th/19th century russian scenery painters, to depict the foggy atmosphere of a rather gloomy day.

NO references used. The composition and all elements are straight outta the head, based on memory and shit.

It's also an experiment for me at using Photoshop texture brushes in a more sophisticated manner. Thanks :iconchaotic-alterego: for her provided brushpack. While the bulk of colorwork was done in Corel Painter, most of the painting itself is done in PS.

All in all, I'm quite pleased with the result and hope you are too. As I promised, my exploration of more "srs" art goes on.

As I said I really wanted to critique this, two main reasons, you're using the custom brushes and many years ago when I started painting in traditional, I did with landscapes.

Despite the fact that natural scenes are not thematically the most original thing ever, as many mentioned, I think it's a basic exercise that every artist who calls himself one, shall explore at some point, it does not only helps you to improve your technique with backgrounds and perspective, but it is also a great way to translate your thoughts and emotions to images without over-thinking a concept. Since what you did here, and I think all of us who did landscapes without reference, follows a similar creative process to the abstractionism process, without all the pretentious crap inherent to abstract art.

As for the "vision" and "impact", it does evoke something, everything inside the composition is twisted, something that captured my attention instantaneously was the position of the trees, they doesn't seem to be affected by a simple blowing wind, but more by a tempestuous centrifuge wind, all that draw your eyes to the main road and the line in the horizon. This effect is attenuated by the use of a dull contrast in the sky though, it almost feels like you were trying "to repress the storm". I'd have been more aggressive with the tones overall, but that's more of a personal thing.

Finally technique, you did a fairly decent work with the brushes, but the transition between both programs needs more attention. Mainly the ground, foliage, needs more detail as it seems very detailed at parts and smudged randomly at other parts (to me those "smudged" parts are parts you brought from Painter and you didn't cover in PS, am I right?), it's very obvious at the right side of the ground. Something to fix that is establishing your focus and its radius more consciously, because the custom brushes can give you a lot of defined detail quickly, so you have to do a progression in order to balance that effect. You can achieve said progression with your default brushes or blurring out a bit your custom brushes.

That's all. Overall a good work, for something so out of your niche.
